Fourth LUMS Quarterly Debate

mgs

The fourth LUMS Quarterly Debate was held on April 27, 2016. The motion for the debate was "This house believes that the Prime Minister should not resign" and focused on events in the wake of the Panama Leaks. The proposition bench included PML- N MNA Mr. Daniyal Aziz, prominent columnist and editor at Dawn newspaper Mr. Cyril Almeida and Special Adviser to the PM Dr. Musadiq Malik. The motion was opposed by veteran politician Mr. Qamar Zaman Kaira, Mr. Walid Iqbal of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf and renowned tax expert Dr. Ikram ul Haq.

The participants debated the legal and political aspects of the motion with great knowledge and passion to a packed audience. The debate was followed by a thrilling question and answer session and audience voting on the motion. The opposition was victorious with a razor thin margin, taking the majority by a vote of 129 to 131!

The event was greatly appreciated by all for creating a space where opposing ideas could be discussed and shared in a tolerant and peaceful manner. We hope to continue this great tradition in the coming academic year.
