Message from Dr. Kamal Munir, Dean, Mushtaq Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences (MGSHSS), LUMS about the event:
"This year, under the auspices of the Debates and Recitation Society (DRUMS) we are beginning a new tradition at LUMS - quarterly debates modelled on the Oxford Union. Through this format called the "LUMS Quarterly Debate", we hope to propagate a much needed culture of civic discourse on some of the most pressing issues of our time. The idea, very simply, is to promote tolerance of conflicting views in our society and encourage debate and discussion instead of antagonism rooted in ideology and dogma.
The debates will always be held around provocative motions. The first debate in this series is set to take place on Wednesday November 11th, 2014 at LUMS on the motion, "This House Believes that Pakistan should adopt a hardline policy, curbing all engagements with India given recent events". Mr.Ayaz Amir and Mr.Shamshad Ahmad (Former foreign secretary) will be joining us on the proposition bench, while Ms Ayesha Siddiqua and Mr. Shaharyar Khan (Chairman PCB ) will bring forth the point of view of the opposition. LUMS will be represented on the panels by two of our best student debaters. Please do join us on Wednesday evening for the first debate."
