The Gurmani Centre is pleased to welcome Mr. Luis Monreal, General Manager AKTC (conservation specialist, art historian and archaeologist) for a conversation on how the reconstruction of physical cultural assets and the restoration of immaterial cultural heritage contribute to material progress in contemporary communities and societies. Since its inception in 1988, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) has undertaken 350 renovation and conservation projects including 11 at UNESCO World Heritage Sites across the Muslim World. Through the rehabilitation of urban and rural Muslim heritage, the AKTC highlights the contribution of Muslim societies to the realm of art and culture. Luis Monreal has had a long-term association with the AKTC, established by His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan to promote and preserve the diverse cultural heritage of Muslim societies. Monreal joined the AKTC in 1997, bringing with him a wealth of experience in the fields of architecture, urban design, and heritage conservation. Under his leadership, the AKTC has implemented numerous cultural heritage conservation and revitalization projects in countries such as Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, and Syria. Monreal has played a key role in the restoration and revitalization of historic urban environments and cultural landmarks, such as the historic city of Bam in Iran and the Azhar Park in Cairo. In addition to his work with the AKTC, Monreal has been an active participant in international forums on cultural heritage preservation and has received numerous awards and recognitions for his contributions to the field. He is recognized as a leading expert in cultural heritage preservation and a passionate advocate for the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of Muslim societies. With a strong background in cultural preservation and heritage management, he remains dedicated to promoting cultural heritage and improving quality of life in communities in the developing world. He has been instrumental in preserving traditional architecture and improving living conditions for indigenous communities. An expert in cross-cultural liaisons, he is respected for his professional skills and his dedication to cultural preservation.
