Dean of the LUMS Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences (MGSHSS), Prof. Kamal Munir's paper has been accepted in the history journal, Modern Asian Studies. The paper is titled 'Privatization in the Land of Believers: The Political Economy of Privatization in Pakistan'. Using qualitative and quantitative data, the authors describe the motivations behind privatizations in energy and banking sectors, the process by which they were carried out, and analysed the post-privatization performance of these organisations and sectors. The analysis sheds new light on the process by which privatization in the absence of a state with the capacity to discipline business interests, may enable these interests to obtain state-sponsored rents without bringing any of the associated benefits for economic development.
